A 'Clean' start..

Darlings, time has come for me to leap into my very first 'cleanse' for the year. Yep, it's 'detox time'..!

As much as I have loved the abundant & carefree eating habits of the holiday period (I would have it no other way!) I have definitely reached a point where I want to give my body a much needed break so that it can readjust, recover and rejuvenate.

Those of you who read me regularly will know that my life consists of 3-4 detox routines per year. They help me stay healthy & happy, and infuse my life with a raft of positive side effects in health, appearance, performance, and just generally in a sense of wellbeing & inner peace that is hard to beat!

Though of course you inevitably loose a little bit of weight on a good 'detox programme', it is important to know that it is not a 'diet'!
In fact I am hugely against any depriving diets or detox programmes such as the 'lemon detox' because cleansing is not about starving or alienating your body from vital nutrition, but rather to maximise it.

You should only really withdraw those substances that add congestion, toxins and pollution to your organs - such as meats, salt, sugar, dairy, caffeine, alcohol, wheat, nicotine, yeast, heavy metals, chemicals etc. Actually not only do you need to withdraw these, but also replace them with generous amounts of the right kinds of food - ones that are packed with nutrients and beneficial properties that will give your body the fuel it requires in order to perform the taxing tasks of elimination, detoxing, and healing.

Of course there are thousands of 'cleansing and detoxing' programmes out there. What works for me may not work for you, hence I urge each and every one to think hard and carefully about what is achievable and what will fit into your particular life style.

It is also important to think about 'why' you want to cleanse your body because there are many programs out there that can help you achieve a specific goal such as;

- boosting your immune system

- breaking a candida cycle

- restoring the ph balance

- clearing heavy metals in your body

- detoxing the liver or/and kidneys

- expelling parasites

- recovering from long term or chronic illness
etc etc..

Though tempting to dive deeper into one specific area, I usually prefer to do more of a 'general cleanse' where I focus on expelling toxins from all my key organs (stomach, intestines, liver, kidneys, gallbladder, lungs, and skin). By doing this I allow my body to benefit somewhat from all of the above categories, though of course I can not reap the deeper rewards of a fully targeted programme.
I also want to say that even if you decide to cut out only one or two toxic things from your daily life and keep the rest the same, you will benefit. For example, you may decide to go at it without coffee, sugar, bread, dairy, meat, wheat or alcohol for a couple of weeks (the longer the better) - that too will have a tangible and positive effect on your health & appearance.
Start by doing some research into some of the health areas/issues that concern you personally - e.g. tiredness, sluggishness, insomnia, bloating, mood-swings, breakouts, depression, joint ache, or what ever else may disrupt your life - and cut out a few known toxins that tend to cause those.

As my regular readers will know, I have grown fond of a 'detox programme' by Australian brand 'GNC Live Well' (I am not sponsored!) and I have used their so called 'detox kits' for years with great results.
Other good programmes that are also excellent are:

1. Susan Cabot's 'Liver Cleansing Diet'

90% of all people have over loaded livers! And this is not due to over consuming on alchol or drugs, but from living 'an average life' in today's world. Susan's books are eye opening and very well researched. I highly recommend this one for any/everyone!

2. 'The Life Tree' Cleanse

This company seems to have a great approach to health and living. I am so keen to try their cleansing programme. Including a 'parasite cleanse'! Maybe next time..

3. 'The Goop Cleanse' (by Gwyneth Parltrow)

I am not a huge fan of 'meal replacement plans' but Gwyneth knows what she's talking about so I am endorsing this one.

Of course you don't need a so called 'kit' or 'programme' do to a cleanse - you really can go at it without any herbal supplements or set plans! For me personally though, it is a lot easier to stick to the detox if I have something tangible to hang on to. My 'detox kit' keeps me focused & motivated, and by the time the 2 weeks of supplements have run out I am so much on track that I don't need them to keep on going. In fact I have been known to go on for up to nine weeks with enthusiasm and great results!

Also, the herbal supplements assist certain areas of your body to expel the stored toxins. They make the elimination process a lot more efficient, and in some cases also quicker because their properties specifically target certain areas of your body.
The not so great aspect of the herbs is that the detox side effects tend to get more pronounced. The head- & joint aches, nausea, tiredness and what ever else you may feel will be better or worse pending on how toxic your body is. Though hard, the knowledge that the process is working keeps me going - i.e. the pain proves to me how much pollution is in my body, making it easier to push through.

This particular cleanse will be a tough one - not only because it is Winter (it's easier in Spring and Summer!) but mostly because I have totally allowed myself too much of the good stuff since returning to Sweden a few months ago. I have loved this 'free ride' thoroughly but now it's time to get back on track. I am set to do this (!) and I know that the few days of feeling 'under the weather' will give way to a more energetic & happier me!

Happy New Year!

Hello darlings and 'Happy New Year'!

This year we will tango to zesty Tangerine decor tones, and I couldn't be happier. I adore the spectrum of piquant & vibrant deep oranges and feel very inspired by the colour direction for 2012.

For our wardrobe there will be more than 'Tangerine Tango' to keep us dancing into Spring. Try 'Cabaret', 'Solar Power', 'Margarita', 'Sodalite Blue', 'Cockatoo' and 'Starfish' to mention a few (for full fashion colour trend report click HERE).

I feel inspired to soak up this zesty and bright colour energy and focus on getting our home on right keel after the holidays.
Though I will leave the tree up for another few days (Oscar & Isabella will force me to resign as mother if I don't..!), I am very keen to stow away Christmas and allow the house to breathe again!

The kids will do their bit to clear away the holiday decor by eating one of our ginger biscuit houses tonight.. Something they have planned vocally & excitedly (!) since we planted the last 'Smartie' on the roof in the days before Christmas Eve..! :)

I will also find some time sit down with my brand new wall planner & diary and carefully mark key dates for the year ahead. I love this ritual and get all tingly by the thought of all the exciting and fun things we will embark on in the months to come!

Darlings, just one day to go - can you believe it!?!

I always get nostalgic at the tail end of the year; reflective, pensive, and always so grateful for what the year has brought - the good and the bad. It's been a BIG year for us. Many adventures.. Many changes..

The biggest one of course was the move from Australia to Sweden, which marked the end of my 23 years as an expat ('Alien' or 'Euro-trash' as Marshall likes to call me..ha!). I am finally home again in my beloved Sweden!

I am loving every moment and cherishing all that is familiar, yet so new to me due to the years I've been away. Christmas time is of course very special up here in the North. We get the 'Winter Wonderland' dream by default, and where as many of my fellow Swedes dream of sun and hot temperatures, I want to go nowhere. I am completely and blissfully happy with the cold and dark (really!).

Having shared eight fantastic Christmas posts from some of my dear blog friends around the world, it is now my turn to 'talk to you about my Christmas'..

What does Christmas mean to me?

Christmas means kindness, generosity, togetherness and consideration. This can be expressed in an array of ways and I have so enjoyed Sarah Klaassen's lovely Christmas series 'In the Spirit of Kindness'.
Sarah I love every post you have written on the topic and think you have such a beautiful heart! Thank you! xx

It's simply not Christmas without..?

People to share it with.
Though family is the ultimate choice, I have learned over the years abroad that Christmas can be wonderful also with friends (other 'Christmas orphans'), and even strangers if shared in a spirit of kindness, togetherness and joy.

I also used to think snow was absolutely necessary for Christmas but having lived in Australia I learned that it was the darkness I missed.. (Yep, you heard me right..).

My ideal Christmas..

Having lived so far away from my family for so many years all I have ever really wanted for Christmas is a ticket home so that we could all be together.

Now that I am here (insert: cartwheel) I will allow my self to dream about the ultimate Christmas..

A log cabin perched on a mountain side near a small & pitoresque village. There would be lots of snow, low temperatures, Northern lights and perhaps even howling wolves at night.! :)

The cabin would be authentic but big enough to host my entire family and closest friends.
We'd arrive a week prior to Christmas and together we would deck the place, cook the food and build the merry atmosphere. We might squeeze in a spot of skiing, a dog sleigh safari, and long walks under the starry sky at night.

Christmas morning we'd fill the house with scents of seasonal foods, laughter, old time jazz and excitement of what's to come.
Of course we'd roast apples & chestnuts, grill marshmallows, drink hot chocolate with whipped cream & candy canes, bake ginger biscuits & saffron bread, and generally be totally merry and bright..! :)

Log fires would keep us snug and cozy, candles would flicker in the windows casting long shadows over the dressed tree that we would have cut ourselves from the nearby forest... *sigh*.. One year we'll do all of this..! :)

Fave Christmas movie?

In our house we LOVE watching Christmas movies. Especially those with a happy ending - it's all about that cozy warm feeling right! :)

We particularly love 'the Polar Express', 'Prancer' and Dickens' classic 'A Christmas Carol'. The latter is a wonderful way to remind oneself that we can all make a difference. My children curl up close to me during the scary parts when the 'ghosts of Christmas' appear, and without fail there is always a lively discussion about 'morale', and the importance of 'kindness' & 'compassion' at the end of the movie. I love that! :)

Number one Christmas song / music?

Ever since I was little I have loved listening to Adolphe Adam's 'O holy night' (listen to THIS - it's amazing!) and 'Ave Maria' at Christmas time (well, any time really..). They are both magic and are always part of our Christmas playlist, as is a generous selection of old school Christmas jazz.

What's on my Christmas table?

I have always dreamed about hosting the family Christmas dinner and this year my dream will come true! :)

Everyone - including my Godfather - is coming over on Christmas Day for my very own version of an 'Australian Christmas buffet'.
On my buffet table there will be a large roast turkey (I am using Nigella Lawson's recipe - HERE), a bowl of freshly made 'Risotto alla Milanese' (recipe HERE. You can swap the 'dry white wine' for Champagne if you want a nice twist), oven baked figs (topped with freshly grated Parmiagiano-Reggiano).

There will of course also be a Swedish roast ham, home made mustard (by my sister Sofia), a large apple & ruccola salad with a balsamic & honey dressing, smoked salmon carpaccio (topped with fresh coriander leaves, lime juice and large capers), freshly baked breads from my local baker and a generous cheese buffet.

Of course there will be dessert! There will be a large tropical fruit salad (mango, melon, strawberries, kiwi, star fruit etc) with whipped saffron cream.
Also, I have spent the entire afternoon making chocolate truffles (HERE), saffron & roast coconut toffee (HERE - I added a pinch or two of chilli pepper to add some depth amongst the sweetness), and also some chocolate toffee (HERE - thought I swapped the ginger for coffee!).

Tomorrow I will add a few different toppings - like flaked sea salt, fresh chilli pepper, pine nuts and coconut flakes. We all like a bit of flavour in our family! I might drizzle some white chocolate over some to create nice patterns too. We'll see what time allows (it's so much fun though!).

What would I love Santa to bring this year?

It would be lovely if he could bring my husband..!
Marshall sadly has to stay in Sydney due to work commitments and won't be joining us for Christmas this year (the very first we spend apart..!).

Of course he could have flown up for the actual Christmas week, but it is a big ask doing that from Sydney! Instead we were sensible and decided that it would be more fun for the kids (and us) if we held back the trip for the Spring when he can stay longer. We have some wonderful plans for then, which I'll share with you nearer the time.. Actually just the anticipation of all that is enough as a present for me!

Also.. I wish that Santa could bring comfort and relief for those less fortunate than us. May they be the target for acts of kindness, compassion, and support. Christmas is a very difficult time for many and we must not forget to reach out!
I for one will be lighting candles for those suffering in the world and send a prayer of comfort and relief. Please do the same. x

Hello darlings and 'Happy New Week' to you! Four days till Christmas - can you believe it!?! Are you ready? I am not sure I will ever be completely ready - there is always little bits & bobs left to do.. Mostly 'want-to-do's', but that's part of the tradition isn't it - leaving some things to dream about for next year..

Today I have the pleasure of introducing my dear friend Natasha of 'Northern Light'. This lovely girl is as international as one can be - born in Africa, raised in Denmark and now living in the US! And to put a cherry on top, her darling is from China. Isn't it marvelous!?! I love it!

Natasha's blog is a true reflection of her eclectic and rich heritage and her Christmas post is just wonderful. I know you'll enjoy this one as much as I did..! x

Hello! Let me start by thanking Charlotta for this amazing opportunity!

I have been reading Space for Inspiration for a while now, and followed along from afar; all the way from Australia back to Scandinavia and Sweden. It’s been an exciting journey and I will continue to “stay tuned”! Please join me as I will share a little of my “old” and “new” Christmas Traditions with you. As Charlotta so eloquently put it “every family, culture and country has their traditions” and I was asked to share mine….

Here we go..

What does Christmas mean to you?

Christmas is all about family, traditions and great food! Oh.. and as a kid, it's also about the presents underneath the tree! The anticipation of those wrapped goodies is almost too much to bear..!
Growing up with my family (in Denmark) Christmas was really about the whole month of December - not just Christmas Eve (or Day). The early days when Christmas decorations were going up, lighting the calendar candle (marked with 24 lines - burning one for each day until Christmas Eve..), the four Advent Sundays, the count-down..
Some years my sister & I had a 'Pakke kalender'. I remember those fondly, and truly commend my mother (and all of you out there who partake in this tradition!) for taking the time to find 24 small gifts - one to open each and every morning leading up to Christmas. I now know what an undertaking this was - but it was so truly appreciated!

No longer a child, I love the feeling of Christmas, not so much all the hoopla, the gifts and all the craziness that goes on before Christmas. I love the simplicity of the candlelight, the preparations of food leading up to Christmas and Christmas lights on wreaths and Christmas trees! To me it’s all about the feeling of Christmas… whatever your tradition is!!

It is simply not Christmas without..?

Well, hmmmm…. I’ll say it’s simply not Christmas without decorations, however simple and small, without 'Glögg', 'Ris a la Mande', and 'Aebleskiver'. And really… it should be cold outside. And if there is snow – even better! We all dream of a “White Christmas”, don’t we?!? OK, so I now live in tropical Florida, and it’s no secret that there is no snow, but I can dream, right?! … or turn the AC down really low, just so I can put on a blanket!

Your ideal Christmas?

I would book tickets to Denmark for my husband and I. We would leave a good week or so ahead of Christmas and not return until after New Year!
The days leading up would be spent with my sister, her kids, and with my mom & dad! We would be going to either Copenhagen or Aarhus (probably both..!) to look at all the festive windows. We'd drink warm 'Glögg' (click here for a recepie, but know that every household has their own version..!) from the food stalls on the pedestrian streets, and eat warm 'Aebleskiver' (click here for a recepie) while our hands and fingers get cold…. I would breathe in the cold and crisp frosty air, go for long walks in the snow covered countryside, come home and warm up with more Glögg!!
This is written by someone who is dreaming… I was freezing and complaining in September… Can you imagine if it was below zero? I would die! LOL! I have lived in warm weather too long I think :)

Christmas Eve would be spent with the whole family (sadly this has not happened since I left for the US), and we would be enjoying a traditional Christmas dinner, followed by Ris a la Mande with warm cherry sauce for dessert!
We would be dancing around the Christmas tree (Scandinavian tradition) while singing Christmas carols.
Christmas presents would be shared with everyone late in the evening. I still celebrate Christmas on the 24^th!!

Since we would be in Denmark until after New Years, the 'Christmas Spirit' would last for several days!!! Growing up we always went to some of our British friends & family to celebrate 'Christmas Day' on the 25th. They served the BEST home made 'ice cream cake' you can imagine for desert, complemented with a warm fruity sauce. Yummy!!

Fave Christmas movie?

This is a tough question... Growing up we always watched 'Walt Disney' Christmas cartoons in the afternoon of Christmas Eve to pass time before the 'big event'. I remember those fondly!
Now.. it's a toss up between 'Home Alone (I still laugh at that one) and 'the Holiday' with Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz.

Number one Christmas song / music?

Leading up to Christmas I like to play the 'Tony Bennett Christmas Album' in my house - it just sets the mood! However.. it's a little short, so it can get to be a bit too much for weeks on end (you can imagine..).. I might have to get my hands on the new Michael Buble 'Christmas' album - I hear it's really good..!

What's on your Christmas table?

Besides a million live candles, fresh flowers and a few decorations..?

Dinner for Mr. Wonderful & I will most likely be the traditional roast pork, candied potatoes, regular boiled potatoes, warm red cabbage, and thick brown sauce. The best part is when the rind is crisp and thick, and you can taste the bay leaves!
Dessert will be – for sure – 'Ris a la Man'de with warm cherry sauce. And as tradition will have it, one whole almond will be buried in the dish, and whoever gets it, and can prove it (we need evidence people, this is serious business!!!!) will be the lucky recipient of a small “extra” gift.

Since living in The States we often share this meal with friends. I enjoy cooking Christmas dinner and love sharing the Danish Christmas traditions with them!!

What would you love Santa to bring this year?

Two plane tickets to Denmark for next year's Christmas! :) … and a new laptop!

No labels mentioned, but one of those with a little fruit on the top would be nice! I also have a request in for a super cool Tine K black braided leather key ring. (It was sold out when I was back home in September..)

Your Christmas message to the world?

Take the time to enjoy the holidays. Appreciate time with your family! Don’t stress out about the little things, cook good food, and share it with friends!
Remember those around you who are less fortunate. Perhaps volunteer on Christmas Day. And don't forget to make a donation to your favorite charity!!

Make up your own Christmas traditions… We did!! My husband is Chinese but gew up in The States - Christmas is not a particularly big deal to him, and that has opened the door for us to create our own traditions. On the 25^th, while everyone is up at the crack of dawn, we sleep in. While everyone opens presents, we eat fresh baked pancakes (the flat ones… crepes!). While everyone plays with their new toys, shovels snow or are stuck in airports, we take the car for a spin - roll down the windows and enjoy the tropical weather!
While everyone is cooking dinner, we are watching the waves roll in off the coast of Palm Beach. While everyone is stuffing themselves, we are taking a walk on the beach. While everyone is taking naps, we drive home, enjoying all the pretty Christmas lights and have one last bowl of Ris a la Mande!
… But really, I secretly long for a traditional Danish, cold, and white Christmas..

Dear Natasha - what a wonderful Christmas post!

I can so relate to that longing of a Scandinavian Christmas.. Cold, dark, crisp, and full of mystical magic & traditions. It's in our blood isn't it!?!

Though a tropical Christmas, like the ones I used to know in Sydney, are also very nice, they never hit the spot just as a snowy one does..!

I sincerely hope that Santa grants your (not-so-secret-wish) of tickets to Denmark for next year - or better yet, gives you a hike there on his sleigh..! :)

Hello darlings! Today I will cut straight to the chase and introduce you to the sweet Elizabeth. This gorgeous (in every sense) Texan girl (who now calls NY home) writes a fabulous blog called 'Pretty Pink Tulips' - an eclectic and always stylish cyber destination you won't want to miss.

What does Christmas mean to you?

Christmas to me is a beautiful holy time of the year when people seem just that little bit friendlier, jollier and hospitable. It is a time of reflection, celebration and giving.

It is simply not Christmas without?

Holiday music, greenery, the Newst holiday candle, and my collection of 'Nutcrackers'.

Your ideal Christmas?

Is snowy, joyful and full of laughter.

Fave Christmas movie?

'Love Actually' finally edged out 'It's a Wonderful Life' for me. I literally laugh and cry every time I watch it.

No 1 Christmas song/music?

I am already listening to Christmas music around the clock, and love everything from Micael Buble to Mariah Carey.. but my all time favourite song is 'Silend Night', as we sing it in church on Christmas Eve, as we light candles from one to another, and have for as long as I can remember!

What's on your Christmas table?

My Christmas table is set to the nines with greenery, my collection of Nutcrackers down the center and candles flickering in between. My place settings are Bernadaud Happy Holidays, which has a rim of little Nutcrackers around the rim. I use napkin rings of green leather with a large jingle bell and place cards that I have hand written in calligraphy. My husband usually wants a formal meal on Christmas Eve, so will have a beef tenderloin, corn pudding and a spinach salad. For dessert, I'm planning on making a black bottom pie. Yummmmmm!!

What would you love Santa to bring this year?

'Santa' has been treating me to a few lovely things already, so I feel as though Christmas has come early in the form of some gorgeous black suede boots and some sparkly holiday sandals!

Your Christmas message to the world..

Oh, our poor little world right now needs a giant hug. I feel like there is so much turmoil swirling all around. I would love for those who can....to be generous. For those who can....invite someone to share Christmas with you. For those who can...lend a hand to someone who needs it. Let's reach out and love one another and reflect on all we have to be grateful for.

Darlings I am so sorry, I just realized I am running a couple of days behind schedule with my Christmas blog series.. I seem to be chasing minutes this week and not doing a very good job at it. Sincere apologies to my guest posters! xx

With Luica over and done with, it is full steam ahead towards Christmas really and there are still lots to take care of. Fun things, like finishing the shopping, dressing the tree, making sweets & truffles, putting together the gingerbread house and of course writing the rhymes for the Christmas pressies. Do you rhyme? I love it, and think it makes the 'opening process' so much more special. :)

Speaking of special. Today I have the pleasure of introducing the very sweet and talented Stuart. This gorgeous English interior architect & furniture designer writes a fabulous blog named 'What Wilson Wants' - if you don't know it yet, hop across and click the subscribe button. But not after you've read his joyous Christmas post..

What does Christmas mean to you?

Christmas to me is most definitely family! Mine all live in Birmingham (Central England), and I live in London, hence I don't get to see them all as much as I would like to, and when I do, it's only for a very quick weekend. But at Christmas I really feel that I can spend all my time and focus on my amazing family - my Mum, Dad, my twin brother Neil and his wife Beccy.

It's simply not Christmas without..?

German Christmas markets... I adore them! For the past few years, here in London, there is a huge 'Winter Wonderland' in Hyde Park with lots of authentic German market stalls selling food, old fashioned traditional wooden toys, and trinkets... I love going there in the early evening when all the stalls are lit up with soft white lights, and a gorgeous smell of mulled wine is lingering in the air.... Mmmm.

But ultimately, it isn't Christmas without sitting around the table after dinner, chatting and laughing over silly stories, with a great old classic Christmas movie or old Christmas song on in the background. Perhaps with a glass of red wine or sherry..

Your ideal Christmas?

My ideal Christmas would be spent in a quaint cottage in the middle of 'nowhere' with just my family. Snow would be falling all around us whilst we are sitting by a beautiful open fire laughing, drinking, and playing silly games.

Fave Christmas movie?
My favourite Christmas film... don't laugh... is 'Home Alone'..!

It's just one of those films that to me has it all, and for so many different reasons. It reminds me so much of my childhood at Christmas time. Neil (my brother) and I still get extremely excited when 'Home Alone' comes on... Yes we are 29 years old, hahahaha.

Like I said, I like it for so may reasons.. The cinematography is lovely and timeless. The use of colours throughout the film are those classic deep rich reds and greens, which I know are very clique but again are synonymous with Christmas. The Church scenes are lovely and remind me (and also did, when I was a child) that Christmas isn't just about gifts & indulgence, but also about religion, faith, and family.

I also love the sound track to the film... just soooooo Christmasy, it give me 'goose bumps' (happy shivers).

No. 1 Christmas song / music?

My No.1 Christmas song has to be 'O Holy Night'. I can actually listen to it all year round.... its stunning!

It's been covered by so many different musicians over the years, but was first written by John Sullivan Dwight, who re-wrote it from the original version composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847.

I say the song reminds me of being a kid at Christmas because - yes, you've guest it - it was one of the songs on 'Home Alone'. Hahahaha. From the scene when Kevin goes to Church and talks to 'old man Marley' for the first time. Old man Marley's Grand Daughter is singing in in the choir. Magical.

It's just one of those songs that just make you breath Christmas, and what makes it special for me is that it reminds me of my Christmases as a child. I think Christmas is so much more magical when you are little.

What's on your Christmas table?

As I spend Christmas with my family, our table is usually very old fashioned and fussy. If were put in charge, it would be a lot more simple. I really love handmade table setting so perhaps 'my table' would look something like this...

Talk to me about Christmas... Simone of 'The Bottom of the Ironing Basket'

Darlings, today we celebrate 'Lucia' here in Sweden and things are festive and jolly. Everywhere there are concerts and 'Lucia processions' to enjoy.

I am extra excited as my children have taken part in the official Lucia celebrations at our school for the very first time. Bonfires were lit around the school yard early in the morning as we watched the school 'Lucia procession'. The children sang carols, and afterwards Oscar & a few boys from his class read Clement Clarke Moore's famous poem 'A visit from St Nicholas' (.."Twas the night before Christmas.."). All week they have been practicing and they did so beautifully!

I am also very excited to introduce the Christmas post of my dear friend Simone of 'The Bottom of the Ironing Basket'. This gorgeous girl writes the prettiest posts in the whole blogosphere. They are always so full of visual yumminess and warmth - it's always such a pleasure to visit Simone's Ironing Basket!

I actually think that I love Christmas more now than I ever have done....maybe it's the fact that I have two young children and that I am creating our own family traditions....maybe it's the build-up to Christmas, school Nativity plays, Christmas drinks and parties with friends, shopping for gifts, decorating the tree, the children's mounting excitement....maybe it's just that you never really lose that Christmas magic, the excitement, the glow of the lights, the pretty shops, wishing each other a Merry Christmas, the gifts, the love and the warmth of it all.

Decorating our home is a big deal.....my daughter and husband choose the tree together and bring it home (altho I do send them off with very specific instructions re shape/size etc!). We always have a "real" tree, I can't imagine not having one....and most of our decorations have a story or a connection with a place, time or friend...they all have meaning. I could tell you my husband's favourite decoration (a tiny Christmas house bought on one of our first trips to NYC as a couple about 12 years ago) and he could tell you mine (also bought on an early trip to NYC!) We drink hot chocolate, hang lots of white lights everywhere, light candles, hang four stockings above the fireplace and the children take it in turns to switch on the tree lights for the first time each year.

This year I am trying to spend less and aiming to focus on appreciating the simple things...taking in the moments. Instead of tearing round the shops, standing in queues and spending, spending, spending, I am making sure that I see the friends I want to see before Christmas (and usually don't see because we are all tearing around like lunatics!), I am baking with my children, going ice-skating in central London and watching every single Christmas movie and reading every single Christmas book that we have at home, eating mince pies and drinking hot chocolate.

Appreciating the moments, watching the lights twinkle, inhaling, breathing....savouring the magic.

What does Christmas mean to you?

Traditions, being at home, delicious food, family, candles, films, warmth and cosiness...

It is simply not Christmas without..?

A twinkling Christmas tree, my children getting up at 6.30am when it's usually still dark on Christmas morning, Christmas movies....

Your ideal Christmas?

Just the four of us at home and not having to visit anyone!! All our family live in London but when I young I had to choose between spending Christmas with either my mother or my father. Since I married, we have mostly alternated between my parents and my in-laws. Christmas Day does usually involve a drive somewhere!

Fave Christmas movie?

So hard to choose.....I might have to list my Top Five...."Elf", "It's A Wonderful Life", "Sleepless in Seattle", "White Christmas", "Love Actually". I really love Christmas movies!

No 1 Christmas song/music?

I love a choir singing Christmas carols but I also love Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, and Nat King Cole singing Christmas songs.

What's on your Christmas table?

My beautiful 'Royal Doulton' wedding china, silver cutlery, and favourite glasses. A centre-piece of flowers and berries, and lots of candles.

What would you love Santa to bring this year?

Plane tickets for exciting trips and travels during 2012! A beautiful diamond eternity ring would also be rather nice.. :)

Your Christmas message to the world..

Be happy, live life to the full, Look after & be kind to yourself, and each other. Laugh often. Life is too short not to eat dessert!

With that I am off to enjoy a Lucia party with my family and friends. The kids are doing a little 'private performance' of their favourite carols and I can't wait. The only thing missing is Marshall.. the distance between Sweden and Australia feels greater than ever today, but he will be with us in spirit and of course there will be a Skyping session late tonight!

Hello darlings! I hope you are all enjoying a nice weekend.
We are having a lot of fun preparing for Christmas here. The tree is up, though not yet dressed as it is a tradition in our family to wait until the week before Christmas to do so.
We have also baked saffron bread and ginger biscuits, and started writing our Christmas cards. Next weekend we'll be making truffles and sweets for our family & friends, and we'll also be making a ginger bread house. So many lovely things to do this time of the year don't you think!?! :)

P.S. On Tuesday it's the 13th December and we celebrate 'Lucia'. The tradition can be traced back to 300AD and to the Sicilian saint Lucia, who over the years has become a symbol of light and hope during this the very darkest time of the year.

It's a much loved tradition that for us will involve performances by the children at school. This will be the very first time they take part in a formal 'Lucia procession' and I just can't wait to see it!!

We have snow! We have snow! I could marry the fact that WE HAVE SNOW!! :)

The first few flakes of the season fell two days ago and I am over the moon. Waking up to a blanket of white outside is such a treat, and I feel the same excitement as I felt when I was little. Dashing outside to make those very first foot prints on the drive way.. Aaaahh, I love it!! :)

Today I am honoured to introduce one of my favourite bloggettes, Ms Louise of 'Lou Boos and Shoes'. This fabulous woman hails from England, she is a mother, a wife and an amazing inspiration to me. She has a way of writing that seems to flow straight to my heart. She makes me stop and think about life, and her posts inspire me to grow and become a better person. Lou, you really do! xx

What does Christmas mean to you?

I have always been a Christmas lover. As a child of course; but even as I entered adulthood, I held onto the traditions of our family Christmases and now recreate them for my children. It's a very important time of year for me. A chance for family: for something special, something cherished, something luxury...

It is simply not Christmas without...

Danish dinner!

My Mother is Danish and every year, absolutely without fail, the family gather at her house on Christmas Eve for a Danish feast. The menu is very traditional: roast duck stuffed with prunes and apples, red cabbage, caramelised potatoes and gravy. Then we have a creamy rice pudding desert, served with cherry sauce. Hidden in the dessert is a whole almond; whomever gets the almond wins a prize. For my brother and I, it is the epitome of family life, held so dear to us both. Only my Mum knows how to cook the meal; we have yet to persuade her to relinquish the secrets of it!

Your ideal Christmas?

Despite my love of family times at Christmas, I have, in more recent years, had a yearning to get away at Christmas. I fantasise about staying in a hotel, somewhere snowy and by the ocean, and waking on Christmas morning in the knowledge that nothing is required of me, but to waft down to a beautiful meal, prepared by a chef!

Fave Christmas movie?

I know I should provide an erudite answer; but it's a tie between 'Home Alone' and 'The Polar Express'. Yes, I know...but both represent the pure childhood excitement of Christmas for me.

Number One Christmas song/music?

My husband and I were married at Christmas-time, so 'Winter Wonderland' will always be special to me. It was our first dance at our wedding :-)

What's on your Christmas table?

Now that we live in a rural place, I go out to collect Ivy and Holly from the garden and make a centre piece which is very rustic...just foliage and candles. I love the Danish Georg Jensen golden decorations so they are often a feature also. My husband does all the cooking at Christmas (thankfully!); last year he cooked a goose, I'm not sure yet what will grace our table this year...but I know it will have all the trimmings; he is not really capable of half-measures!

What would you love Santa to bring this year?

Over the years I have been lucky to receive some fabulous Christmas gifts...this year; I'm hoping for some french lingerie, or a fine Smythson diary or maybe a diamond or two of the earring variety!

My message for everyone else, as much as for myself, is...

Enjoy it, don't stress the small stuff,
take a moment to breath it all in.

Make memories and traditions for the children;
it will form their Christmases for years to come.

By Invitation Only.. 'Some enchanted evening'..

Hello my dears! Hope you are enjoying my little 'Christmas guest post series'! Weren't Emma and Maria's posts just lovely!?! I loved reading about their Christmas inspirations and I can't wait to share the rest of the line up of bloggers extraordinaire. But today I am pausing the series in order to participate in this month's 'By Invitation Only' blog party.

You see we (the 'BIO girls') have been invited to a virtual Christmas party at the amazing house (..to-be) of our dear friend Tina of 'The Enchanted Home'.
No expense has been spared - there will be live music, carolers, tuxedo clad help, exquisite foods, and the champagne will not stop flowing.

Our brief for today's post is to reveal what we will wear to this 'enchanted evening' and what we will bring as a 'hostess gift' for our dear Tina.

So I poured myself a cup of tea and sat down to browse my favourite fashion sites in search for a dress. Having reviewed a whole raft of fab designers and pieces I settled for the 'Lifechanger' dress by Australian designer duo 'Sass & Bide'.

I simply adore the girls behind the label, and their fresh take on fashion as a whole. The 'Lifechanger dress' has a full length gathered muslin skirt and an amazing embroidered bustier with a strong ethic / tribal feel. I love that it's simple yet unique, elegant yet quirky and formal whilst also being fun & different.

Underneath that gorgeous cascade of soft black muslin I would hide a pair of Gucci 'Houston' platform heels, that really would continue to emphasize that stunning vertical line of the dress (very flattering in these times of indulgence..ahem!).

My hair would be pulled up in a bun of some sort, and the make up mainly focused on dramatic eyes, and flawless glowing skin (all over).

As for jewelry, I would layer quite a few chunky 'Smashed' bangles on my arm, thread on a pair of 'Pointed tip' earrings to balance the sleek hair, and also slip a black onyx 'Doodle' ring on my finger (all pieces by Orit London).
Nothing whimsical or too ornate (I am not a girly-girl), just something to enhance the ethnicity of the dress and to add some subtle glitz. Or as Marsha puts it, "It is Christmas after all, and we must all sparkle"! I love you Marsha! xx

Apart from the full length, black 'Opera cloak' I would be wearing on top of the dress upon arrival, that is it. No more no less.. Well apart from the 'hostess gift' of course, which would be a lovely 24 karat gold plated 'Whish bone' from Sue de Chiara's wonderful e-boutique 'The Zhush'.

I simply love these and intend to get one for myself after the mad rush to Christmas. They look as lovely on the table as they do framed and hung on the wall!

Talk to me about Christmas... Maria of 'Scandie Foodie'

Hello people! How was your weekend? Ours was really nice. We've accomplished very little, but managed to do a lot.. You know, no major achievements or ticks on the 'to-do-list', but fun things; like watching Isabella's very first ballet performance (I die!), unplanned & exploratory walks, meeting the newborn baby of dear friends, watching cozy movies and going to the art museum for some Christmas crafting. Sheer bliss.. and so what I needed after a crazy week!

I feel relaxed, happy and ready to take on another week now. The last 'working week' for me this year. I am just finishing a couple of large paintings for a dear Client in the US.. After that, just R'n'R and a lot of fun prepping for Christmas..! 20 days to go.. can you believe it!?

Today I have the pleasure of introducing you to my dear friend Maria of 'Scandie Foodie'.
She second participant in my little Christmas blog series, and I am thrilled to have her. I have raved about this gorgeous food guru (yes Maria, you are!!) many times - especially at times of detoxing. You all know my habits by now!

Maria was born in a remote town in Finnish Lapland, just South of the Arctic Circle (how amazing!). She grew up, studied, traveled and then settled in Sydney Australia, as far away from the Arctic Circle as one can possibly get. I know how easily that happens.. Ha!

Maria loves food, and pays great attention to raw produce, and to what is good for the body. She cooks, plates up (styles), photographs, and posts all of her delicious creations, for us to enjoy. And we do! As will you, when you visit her corner of the blog world..!

What does Christmas mean to you?

Christmas in Finland was always a special time of the year, not just because it was Christmas, but because in my area it is also the darkest time of the year. It was important to spend time with the family, and to visit friends and relatives. Christmas in Australia is very different as we are in the midst of summer in December, but still we try to make the time special and be with our family.

It is simply not Christmas without..?

Snow! Christmas in Australia still doesn’t seem quite right to me.

Your ideal Christmas?

Time spent with all of my family, relaxing, eating well, and enjoying a few days off.

Fave Christmas movie?

I’m really not a big movie watcher hence I can’t think of any..

No 1 Christmas song?

Finnish Christmas songs are my favourite as I grew up listening to them. I still don’t know the lyrics for the English versions so I always get them wrong ! :)

What’s on your Christmas table?

Here in Australia we have to keep things light because of the extreme heat. So lots of fresh vegetables and salads. I like to make Finnish vegetarian casseroles as well, as they are not too heavy.

What would you love Santa bring this year?

We will keep this Christmas quite modest as we will have a big year ahead with a new house and a wedding to come!

First and foremost....Snow! I really love a 'White Christmas'. It also wouldn’t be complete without a real tree, holiday baking including mince meat tarts, stockings hung by the chimney with care and family.

Today I spent the entire day wrapping a total of 48 (!!) tiny gifts for the kids' 'advent calendar'..
Red ones with white strings for Isabella and white ones with red strings for Oscar.. Then I tied them onto a long beautiful branch that I picked in the forest (well 'dragged home' is closer to the truth..) and suspended the whole thing from the ceiling.

It may not be a style statement but it's fun, and the kids love it. That's all that counts to me really! :)

Preparing for Christmas..

Hello friends! Am sitting here with a large cup of tea - the kids are asleep, I have lit candles everywhere, and am playing soft Christmas music.. *peace prevails*

..I LOVE this time of the year - 'pre-Christmas'. Though of course the actual even itself is wonderful, there is something so special about the lead-up.. The planning, preparing, waiting, and of course also seeing the kids grow more and more excited.. So much love, warmth and anticipation in the air, don't you think!?

I just flicked through 'Sweet Paul's Holiday Issue'.. Always so much inspiration and joy there. And of course the fact that the 'main man' is from Norway makes it extra.. sweet (.ahem.). You know how I LOVE Norway..!

And of course it was lovely to see our very own Will Taylor's (Mr Bazaar to most) feature on how to create a stress-free but stylish Christmas table..!

I also loved this idea featured by Will!

Kate LeSueur's 'Rosemary Honey Pecan Nut' recipe looked too good to leave off my Christmas buffet list.. (would be great with a cheese tray!).

You see, I go nuts over nuts (!). Not only at Christmas, though particularly then, and I love to serve them in all sorts of ways - in bowls around the house, on biscuits, in bread, in the traditional (Swedish) rice porridge on Christmas morning, in sweets and deserts... If there is a way, I'll be sure to sneak a hand-full of something nutty in there (thank God I was blessed with a family that aren't nut allergic!). Yum!

I also serve my 'Glögg' (a traditional Swedish style mulled wine.. YUM!) with a generous helping of skinned almonds (as well as a cinnamon stick for decor).
Despite there being a range of wonderful pre-made 'glögg' to buy I prefer to brew my own. I use my great grandmother's recipe (with a little twist now and then.. for fun). It takes three days to prepare and it fills the house with the most amazing scent which sends me straight into Christmas wonderland!

Back to the nuts.. I recently learned from my good friend Maria over at 'Scandie Foodie' that nuts should be ACTIVATED before you eat them. Who knew??! But reading her post (HERE) made me very inspired and I am definitely serving my nuts 'activated' this Christmas..!

More nuts.. I adore Oak trees - their solid structures, their leaves and of course their acorns. They have been a long time favourite of mine, so imagine my delight when I found these cute 'acorn baubles' over at Cox & Cox UK. I adore this store!

Also from Cox & Cox are these 'glass pumpkin baubles', which of course would look lovely with the acorn ones on the tree (not too many though - less is more!).. Or as place card holders, like in the picture below. Tempting, very tempting indeed..!

Today I am going nuts..

Hello lovelies! Doesn't Autumn have just the most wonderful effect on people and life!?! The buzzing energy of Summer fades and we settle into a calm, cozy and tranquil mood. With only a couple of weeks left of Autumn I am feeling relaxed, harmonious and ready to tackle Winter!

Every year around this time my mind goes into 'dream mode' (read: 'I allow myself to go a little nuts over a few tings'..). And it's not only because Christmas is just a few weeks (how!?!) - which of course calls for mental wishing & giving lists to be drafted. It's got more to do with the need to nurture myself as the temperature drops and the days grow shorter (a stark contrast to Sydney..!). I find myself daydreaming and drifting into 'wishing land' where frankly there are so many yummy things I want. Of course I don't need them, but they would be much welcomed 'nice-to-haves'.. Here are some of the things that make me go a little nuts at the moment..

Wonderful table runners (by South African online shop 'Yum Yum') that really look better vertically than horizontally - don't you think!?
I am ordering a fork and a knife (without the stitching around the edges - I like a 'raw edge'). A nice little 'gift-to-self'..! :)

It is no secret that I go more than a little silly over good quality Swedish sheepskins (curly ones!), but recently I am finding myself dreaming about reindeer skins from Lapland..! They feel 'new' and different in this day of sheepskin craze.

Also from the rugged Swedish North are these beautiful hand crafted bracelets (braided leather, silver and/or tin thread). They are hand made by local crafts people and come in a variety of widths, designs and colours. I just adore them and would like to highlight this very modest online store.

Mulberry has been a favourite brand of mine since my teens, and I adore their handbags. At the moment I am drooling over their 'Bayswater' bags.. I am wishing one would simply fall from the sky and into my arms..! *sigh*

Even though the frosty mornings and imminent snow prevent me from actually wearing anything but thick leather footwear, I still drool over orange neon (!) All Stars by Converse. I just love the way they 'pop', and am definitely getting some in time for Spring! These babies will look better once worn, and I am going to team them with tanned legs and a spring in my step! :)

Last but certainly not least, I have also fallen hard for several garments by 'Jarbo'. This, new to me, label was recently snapped up by 'Splendid Avenue' - a web boutique that is as stylish as the woman who owns/runs it (meet Monika).

Monika also authors a much loved blog called Splendid Willow, and tomorrow you will find me (and a bunch of very stylish blogettes) sharing our '2 cents' on current design trends that make us go 'va va voom'!

Hello lovelies. Feeling sad after saying good bye & 'bon voyage' to my husband who left on Saturday after spending two blissful weeks with us here in Sweden.

Due to work commitments my darling had to fly off to Singapore and onto China for business meetings, before returning to Sydney.
We won't see him again until February next year and needless to say we are all heartbroken. Life is definitely sunnier with him by our side and we can't wait to be able to wrap our arms around him again..

Swedish affair with Affari..

Hello lovely people! One of my favourite Swedish decor brands is 'Affari AB'.

Located in the South of Sweden this small, privately owned company was founded in 1998 by a group of four people who at the time sold only candles and candle related products. However their vision and passion for finding unique and stylish decor items from around the world made them grow, and today they sell a wide range of stunning hand selected pieces for indoor as well as outdoor use.

I am mad about their products and have several pieces in my home. My latest purchase is a large (and very heavy) ice tub in cast aluminium. I can see it used all year around in an array of scenarios (e.g. drinks, fruit, twigs, candles etc) but for now I intend to fill it with Hyacinths (like in the picture below) for my Christmas buffet table. It will be surrounded by candles, Pine or Juniper tree branches, and of course a parade of Swedish seasonal delicacies. I think this will look nice.. What do you think darlings?

I have also placed an order for a wonderful (and big!) three tiered tray, also in solid cast aluminium (below).
It too will make its debut in December when I intend to fill it with nuts, home made truffles and perhaps a load of ginger biscuits. I can't wait for it to arrive!

There are so many things I want from this company and I know I'll be adding some of their rustic pots (in their perfectly distressed (mossy) drained terracotta / white clay execution..).

And oh perhaps a trio of hammered silver plated pots too... I have seen them with baby Myrtle trees and also with chunky charcoal coloured candles, and both look great!

I also adore their royal chandeliers. There are several in their collection but I like the simplicity of the one below...

And what about some selected galvanized sheet metal urns & tubs (yum), and/or a duet of concrete candle sticks (the big ones!)..

I can so see this one filled with ruby red apples.. or filled with Spring twigs..

And don't get me started on their carved panels (below).. I never knew MDF could look so sexy people..! I can see this one being used as a wall decoration, window panel, and/or as a table top (with glass on top).

**Sigh.. so many things to drool over here don't you think!?!. I especially love the way the catalogue has been styled this year - timelessly Swedish with a nice edge. Let's dream together through some final pictures from their most recent catalogue..

These reindeer are super cute and come in two sizes. I can see a couple in the kids' room for Christmas..!

And true to their roots, Affari still makes the most wonderful candles and candle products.. Loving their lantern (the tall ones with those fabulous big rings at the top..!).

I am personally not a big fan of 'Shabby Chic' style. It's nice but just not 'me'.
If you feel the same, do make sure you practice restraint when decorating with your Affari pieces. They need a backdrop of 'preppiness' and uncluttered/clean settings to work (in my humble mind). Less is definitely more if you want to avoid Shabby Chic..

If on the other hand you DO embrace 'Shabby Chic' style (below), there are plenty of 'French romantic' pieces in the Affari collection. Just layer them with lots of white and vintage, et voila!

Hello darlings! I am sorry for being such a lousy blog friend these days. I feel as if I haven't really had a chance to regularly catch up with you since I moved to Sweden back in July. I want you all to know that I read your posts regularly, only I am not able to comment as often as I used to. I will make an effort to change this as I know that the exchange of thoughts and lovely comments is what blogging is really about. And I miss doing it!

My husband (Marshall, or 'Treats' as I prefer to call him..!) is here in Sweden for a couple of weeks and life is fabulous. It's simply heaven to be a 'family' again and the kids are floating on cloud 49! :)
So today's post won't be extensive - just this house tour from a lovely & warm home in Girona (Emporda region), Spain. As you know I have a real weakness for this kind of simple rusticity and I would love to own a small but lovingly restored place like this somewhere in the South of Europe.. Enjoy!

Today when lounging over at the fab Anne Sage's 'City Sage' I came across this picture that stopped me in my tracks.

The wonderful monochromatic inspiration of her post aside (yum also for the black cabinet in pic 3!), I fell hard for the way that the little gold ornaments on the left are hung. I really like the irregularity of the base vs the neatness of the top, and how it feeds off the colour and movement in the staircase.
I can see this way of hanging art working very well in my dining room. Perhaps even in combination with a simple shelf..?! Hmmm.. time to procrastinate... :)

T is for Tea Towels..

Hello my dears! How are you all and how has your week been? All is just dandy here. Actually it is better than that and I feel as if I am on a total high at the moment. Happy through and through to be in my beloved Sweden in fact. I feel as if my soul is filling up on the energy of my birth country, and it is heaven to be back permanently after so many years abroad. :)

Today I want to share a wonderful online resource - 'All Tea Towels'.

The store is run out of the UK and carries hundreds of tea towel designs in a variety of high quality finishes - 100% pure linen, pure cotton, and/or blended varieties too. For someone like I who loves tea towels it's like a well stocked 'lolly store', and to my delight I was given the opportunity to choose two designs for free in return for an honest review.

Good quality tea towels aren't all that easy to come by (really!) and I like mine highly absorbent and durable whilst nice to look at. Kitchen aesthetics people - so important, don't you think!?

Having had the hardest time choosing from the extensive range (!!) over at 'All Tea Towels' I chose two from the 'Flowers & Nature' section (there are an impressing 26 sections in total!!).

Both designs are 100% Pure linen and I just love them!

I followed the instructions and machine washed them several times in hot water to remove the starch and they came out beautiful.
Though I love both my towels, I fell extra hard for the bright red 'Chrysanthemum' design and just placed an order for another five (making a total set of six) so that I can use them as napkins for when we celebrate 'Australian Christmas' in December. They are actually so big that they could easily be cut in half and still work as napkins, but I quite like the quirky look of over-sized table linen so I will use them in their original state.

I also bought a set of six super cute linen towels for a dear blog friend overseas. Actually, the kind owner of 'All Tea Towels' threw in an extra tea towel (making them a total of 7!) . So generous. Thank you again Al! x

I can't show you the design or my clever friend will know they are for her.. Again I pictured them being used as table linen but who knows, they may end up being used as picnic napkins, aprons, breakfast-tray liners, sewn together as cute pillows covers or something else..!? Hello darlings! Did you know that the first Friday of October every year is 'World Smile Day'!? It's motto is 'Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile'. Can you imagine the ripple effect if we all do this..!?!

Of course this one-day global initiative should not stop anyone from smiling and being kind every day and always, but I think it is wonderful that the world celebrates boundless friendliness and kindness in this manner!

Smiling is such a powerful gesture and has the most amazing effect on the person who smiles and the world around him/her. A genuine smile is contagious, and you will find that the old saying 'Smile and the world will smile with you' is true!

Hello lovelies. It is that time of the month again when I join an impressive and talented group of international bloggers that post under the label 'By Invitation Only' (founded by my dear friend Marsha Harris).

On the first Tuesday of every month we post an interpretation of a given theme - in what ever flavour and flair we may individually fancy.

Last month's post was based on William Henry Channing's 'Symphony' (HERE) and I read some truly spectacular posts from the 'BIO' participants.
This month the inspiration comes from French writer Gustave Flaubert (best known for his novel 'Madame Bovary') who founded the saying 'Le bon Dieu est dans le détail' meaning that it's all about the details...

Life's most memorable moments are often made up of fine detail that stick out and make that specific time/place/person special - i.e. the so called 'the little things'.. A smell, a specific colour, a piece of music, the way someone speaks, a particular way of preparing a dish, a small gesture that makes all the difference.. This can be good or bad, and often the margin between the two also lays in the fine details.. One small twist and those 'little things' can change perfection into utter disaster - and vice versa.. :) That's what makes life so unpredictable, fun, and such a wonderful learning experience don't you think..!?!

Though tempting to philosophically dwell on the beauty of life and those situations where 'details' play a major part (which btw is all the time if you ask me..!), I have chosen to stay lighthearted and in line with a simple but true passion of mine - namely table decor... Or as I prefer to look at it; creating an ambient, warm, and enjoyable eating experience. And as with everything else in life, table decor is ALL about the details..!

Since early childhood I remember my mother preparing for dinner parties with great attention to detail. The linen was starched & pressed, the silver polished, crystal glasses washed & hand dried. There were always flower arrangements scattered through out the house. Candles were pre-lit as to ensure they would burn evenly by the time the guests arrived. Special foods was ordered from select suppliers, then prepared and served in the most mouth watering way possible (my mother is a wonderful cook!).

My dad would line our driveway with lanterns, and inside out, our home would glow with welcoming warmth. Nothing would be left to fait - every detail was carefully considered, lovingly attended to and every effort made to ensure our guests would feel valued and cared for.

My somewhat hectic life may not allow me to go to the same extent as my amazing parents (my mother would even hand comb the fringes on the rugs.. !), but one thing I am very particular about (and sensitive to..) is the ambience created at meal times...! I will always make an effort to create a beautiful table and pleasant mood even if it means just lighting a few candles at breakfast time to ensure the kidlets wake up with a sense of love & care. A little goes a long way in the wee hours of a school day..
When it comes to weekend meals (formal or casual..) I love to take it a bit further''... As do these wonderful Autumn tables... Some have made their rounds around the blog universe for some time but they are still worthy of 'detail studying'.. Enjoy! x

In stark contrast to my previous post, here's a home that is all but restrained..! It may not be something I'd rate as my personal dream home, but what a quirky and interesting place people!. I just love the passion and joy behind the creation of this warm and quirky family home, and can only imagine the wonderful stories behind the scenes..!

Fireplace from France, purpouse made circular art (back right) from Spanish cow hides, rug from Morocco, the arm chairs French market finds, candle sticks from Berlin.. in short, this antique timber house now hosts treasures from all corners of the world. Do you think the priest could have ever imagined when he built it way back when..!?! :)

After 10 happy years in San Francisco, Ingvild & Olaf felt their homeland calling (I can so relate..!) and had a strong desire to return to the Nordic quietness and landscape. They longed to live in the country side and found a large piece of land in the forest just West of Oslo. All they needed then was a house - an old one with lots of character..

Excuse the poor quality of my scan.. but this picture was not part of Sköna Hem's digital gallery.. This is the kind of house onto which you want to toss a couple of sheep that will keep the grass trimmed.. :)

They responded to an ad for a 'Timber built preacher's-den on the mountain, early 17th cent', though found the 'house' had in fact been de-mounted into a pile of timber (!). But they bought it anyway and started the painstaking job of first moving it (the pile..) to their forest patch, and then piecing it together. How courageous!
The result is a genuinely unique and charming two story home with tangible soul and so much personality.

Ingvild is an interior designer and Olaf an astrologer/psychologist (wonderful collective knowledge here, don't you think!?!), and together with an architect friend they designed large windows that were set into the timber frame to allow the forest to merge with the inside. In fact these people love the forest so much that they actually sleep outside during the warmer months of the year. I remember doing just that too when I was a little girl, and it was such an adventure and I loved watching the night sky in my sleeping bag! Have you ever tried?

These people are sleeping on hay people..! Even the bed head is made of hay, and then covered in fabric..

They also 'up-cycled' old building materials, vintage finds, antiques, hand-me-downs, and second hand buys. They became so good at it that it evolved into a business of importing & selling European vintage and demolition materials. One can only imagine the treasures they come across!

Hello lovelies! I am typing this from a truly Autumnal Sweden - the wind is ruffling the trees sending cascades of yellowing leaves past my window.
Summer has definitely left us, and in a seemingly constant glow of candle light (I am a candle addict!) I find myself drifting into a slow & comfortable pace of life - Autumnal bliss..!

My mind seems to swing like a pendulum between food (eating!) and interiors at this time of the year. With equal measure I crave cooking- and interior- magazines & blogs right now and I find myself drawn to richer colours, more rustic finishes, and nurturing environments.

This is what I had for lunch today.. this photo from my kitchen table..

Golden Chanterelles & Horn of Plenty mushrooms (that I pick in the nearby forest), ruby red 'lingon berries', sweet figs, fragrant chestnuts, fresh beetroot, pumpkins & carrots bought from my local farmyard (a wonderful self-service farm outlet!), ripe plums, pears & apples picked in my garden all glow with such rich vibrancy that they inspire me to both cook an decorate..

The Rowan trees are heavy with clusters of bright red berries that work wonderfully when wanting to add a touch of Autumn inside. I adore them in every shape and form!

I currently have a single twig in an over-sized glass bottle in my living room (that desperately needs art and window dressing still.!), and I have used small cuts of berries and leaves to brighten up the place settings on my dining table.

I am also planning to thread single berries on thin steel wire and bend into 'single strand wreaths' for my kitchen and dining room windows. For one of many tutorials HERE..

The leaves are starting to change from green to a spectrum of yellows, though it will be a few weeks still until they explode in their 'grand finale' of vivid colours. My regular and long term readers might remember an Autumnal guest post by my dear friend Minna Mercke Schmidt last year, where she showed us how to tie a beautiful leaf wreath. Autumn (Sept-Nov) here in Sweden is referred to the 'food season' because of the abundance of fresh local produce.

The harvest has brought an array of wonderful root vegetables, beekeepers are offering jars of fresh honey, the forest is serving up a 'smörgåsbord' of delicacies (berries, mushrooms, chestnuts etc), the gaming/hunting season and cattle slaughtering are in full swing, and the ocean is treating us to and array of crustaceans & heavenly seafood. Simply put, this is THE time of the year to visit Sweden if you are a food lover!

Another culinary excuse (..if you need one!) to travel to Sweden this time of the year is the annual harvest of the black 'Gotland truffle' (October/November)!! Yes you heard me right, Sweden is home to some of the world's best black truffle. It may not be as well known or 'famous' as its Italian or French 'truffle cousins', but actually on par in quality, fragrance and flavour!

Perhaps you feel like learning the secrets of truffle hunting & harvesting (?), in which case you can join 'Gotlandstryffel & Smakrike Krog' in their annual 'truffle safari'. You don't even have to bring your own 'truffle pig'..ha!

With all of this in mind, you can imagine why I am purring in contentment and delight right now. There are so many wonderful things to enjoy and look forward to in the next couple of months. Rugged up outside or snug & cozy inside I am enjoying Swedish Autumn to the full!

Hello my dears. The kidlets & I are off to the Stockholm archipelago to visit close friends for the weekend, and we're so looking forward! Just wanted to duck in here first to share this wonderful photo..

I love the textures & colours, and think it would look fab blown up large, and framed!
It's from Jackson Pollock's studio (I adore his art!), via an interesting article about his and Lee Krasner's Hampton home (in the latest issue of Australian e-zine 'EST'). The article is written and photographed by Robyn Lea.

Two talented, strong minded abstract artists with a lot of influence on their genre of art.. can you imagine the passionate (if not stormy..!) discussions at their dinner table..!?

I was quite surprised by the tranquility and soothing 'whiteness' of their humble home. According to the article they were apparently avid beach combers, and used to stroll along the shore line collecting shells and drift wood.. I wonder if this is where Jackson picked some of the sticks he used when creating his wonderful works..?! Oor was it just a source of relaxation to quiet the mind..?!

Madrid loft..

Hi lovelies. Just stumbled across this beautiful loft in Madrid, Spain. Don't you just love the use of red/orange, white, black and natural wood!?!

Am also smitten with this large white piece of art. It relaxes me and I love the circular detail. I might just try to replicate something like this for my bare walls in our new place here in Sweden.. I promise to share the result if I achieve something reasonable, though it may take some time as our consignment is still making its way from Sydney to Stockholm by ship.

The black/white piece on top of the vintage luggage is also very nice, and I love the tension between it and the fun little desk lamp. Simple yet impactful.

And don't you love the follow through in the bike.. Colour co-ordination done by a pro.. :)

Dreaming of a Swedish bakery..

Hello lovelies and happy new week to you all! How about throwing all sense & caution to the wind and buying the quaint 'Rute Stenugn' bakery on the island of Gotland in Sweden..!?!

Yep, it's for sale folks and for a mere 3.8million Swedish krona you could be waking up to the smell of freshly baked organic bread, straight from the log fired oven. Aaaahh!

Gotland as you may know, is a unique island in the North Sea off the East coast of Sweden. It's known for it's spectacular scenery, tangible heritage, local crafts, sheep (the famous Gotland sheep) and lots more. You simply have to go there if you get the chance!

The Rute Stenugn bakery includes a fully equipped cafe (originally an old black smith's cottage..), and a lovely greenhouse that has been converted to a dining area.

Perched on a hill near by is a comfy residence which was merged with an old three story mill.. I can imagine the owners of the bakery would have lived here quite happily.

Home sweet home..

Hello my darlings! I am finally back after what feels like an eternity of time away from you, and I am so thrilled to be typing this very first post as a resident of my beloved Sweden. Yay!

The move (and all that came with it) is thankfully behind me now and I am in some sort of 'transitional stage' of nesting and adjusting to living in Sweden. Most people probably expect me to already feel at home since I was born here but the truth is that both the country and I have changed so much in the 23 years I have lived abroad that I am faced with a somewhat 'mind-messing' (technical term..) task of re-discovering a familiar place.. I have a sense of 'belonging' but not quite 'fitting in'. This is not necessarily a bad thing..

Just over a week ago we got the keys to our new place - a two story apartment in a small block of flats in a leafy and tree lined street. The rooms are flooded with natural light with typically white walls and tall ceilings.
Since my husband is still based in Sydney for work reasons (sob sob!) we are currently running two complete households which means that my 'Swedish nesting budget' is vastly restricted. At this stage our place is a functional yet rather 'bare shell' of what will be our home for the next 12-18 months (before we head on out into the 'great big world again'..). Of course there has been a long list of essential 'new-buys', but I have also tried to make good use of what I had stored away here in Sweden since I left. As such we are living with an eclectic mix of pieces that I am trying to mould together into a reasonably eye-pleasing end result.. It will certainly not be a 'show home' but that is not my aim. Instead I am focusing on creating a homely and cozy base from which we can launch into our 'Swedish adventure'.

So that's the state of affairs from my corner of the world for now.. I am spending most of my time ensuring the kids are happy & calm after a very trying few weeks of good-byes, packing, general stress & unsettledness. I miss you all very much and am so looking forward to a time (in the not too distant future..!) when I can finally plonk myself down on one of my beloved Swedish antique kitchen chairs and start blogging for real!

Until then.. I am sending you lots of big warm hugs from my beautiful Sweden! I get chills of joy down my spine typing that.. :)
