A taste of Swedish Summer..

Hello hello! Today is the 'second day of Winter' here in Australia (the official first day of Winter is June 1), and as such I am going to cheer myself up with a post all about Summer.. ! ;)

After yesterday's post I received a lovely email from a Danish girl who lives in California, and we got talking about sweet childhood memories and home made cordial.. Yum!

I remember vividly the arrival of the 'first strawberries' of the season.. Not imported ones, but locally grown, real Swedish strawberries bought directly from the farmer..!

My mother would send me & my sister by bicycle to buy them, knowing full well that we'd nab a fair few strawberries on the way home..  Because who can resist freshly picked, sun-warm strawberries..!?!

Apart from fresh berries, lots of wonderful, seasonal treats would make their way to our table through out Summer, and this always included my grand mother's home made strawberry (and rhubarb) cordial.. Sometimes she'd mix it with elderflower or red currant too..

I have been searching high and low for the original recipe  she used when we were little, but I can't find it (to my despair!). But the one below looks pretty good and I might in fact attempt to recreate a 'glass of Swedish Summer bliss' for my own children. We're really spoiled here in Australia because we have fresh berries and fruit all year round..!

Enjoy, and please let me know how you go.

xx Charlotta

P.S.

If you can get your hands on 'wild strawberries' (the kind that grows road side or in the forest..) DO use that instead as these berries are so much sweeter. My favourite!

What a sweet summer memory, Charlotta! I loved picking strawberries when I was a little girl. It was always really hot, but the fruit was always such a sweet treat.
Hope the rest of your day is lovely!

What wonderful memories come bubbling up as I think of my childhood in Oregon and the anticipation of the first crop of strawberries each June. We never made cordials but I think I might have to give it a try! Strawberry Shortcake was always our family favorite. Depending upon the time of summer, we would also add blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries too!

Hi Charlotta,

First of all, I smiled at the rhubarb! It's amazing to me how many people have not heard of it. I remember playing outside at my aunt and uncles house. If we said we were hungry, they would tell us to go pick rhubarb, wash it of and eat it. So we did :) My aunt would even make rhubarb pie. Love your recipe, so sweet to share, I love to hear your thoughts...always. Childhood is supposed to be sweet. I always think of that with my boys and wonder...what will put a sweet taste in their mouths and what will they remember most? I bet it's something or things that I have no idea their heads have logged! Love to you XOXO, Kelly

I am living it right now!!! Summer time in Stockholm! Wihooo!!! Might even dare to show off my painfully white legs....

Flytten är nu klar och nu är det bara lösa trådar kvar. Inte mycket ro och vila men jag är så lycklig för mina stunder med mamma.

Bloggeriet får vänta tills jag kommer hem. Har varit urskönt att koppla från den!

Warm hugs to you all,

Mon

I just made rhubarb ginger cordial few days ago, but I have to try this one as well!

Summer is in full bloom now in Helsinki and I love it! Still eating imported straberries, but perhaps by Midsummer we can taste the first Finnish ones as well, or at least find those juicy wild strawberries.
